It is nearly one month after Shannon celebrated her first birthday and I am still in love with the details and how this cake came together. When Amanda, Shannon’s mother, contacted me about creating a carousel cake for her daughter’s first birthday, she said that …
As you can imagine, birthday cakes are kind of a big deal in our house. I always let my boys choose their cake, so we start talking about birthday cake themes several months before the actual birthday celebration. Typically, Jack is my steadfast, predictable child …
There have been some big things happening here at Four Oaks Bakery!
First and foremost, we welcomed our third son, Waylon, at the end of January. We have spent the last month getting to know each other and navigating our new reality as a family of five. Thank you for all of your well wishes!
Even though we have been taking a break from orders since the beginning of 2017, the bakery has still been moving forward. We have our friend, Lisa, to thank for our beautiful logo and website! I sat down with her back in November and told her what I envisioned for the logo and she made it happen. It is even better than I imagined! Be on the lookout for stickers for bakery boxes, business cards, and redesigned business documents, all containing our new logo. I’d love to get some t-shirts made, as well!
Having a newborn brings many hours of sitting on the couch during feedings and daytime naps–for him, not me! When I wasn’t staring in awe at the sweet new baby in my arms, I was researching cake trends and new techniques for creating delicious, beautiful, and fun cakes, cupcakes, and cookies for you. Pinterest and YouTube were almost always open as they are my go-to’s for ideas and inspiration.
All of the research had me itching to make a cake again, so I decided to experiment and see how long it would take to make a cake, now that I have a newborn. A baby definitely throws a wrench in the system! My 3 year old son, who is a total sweet tooth, saw pictures of a sprinkle cake and asked to make one and I ordered some new brands of fondant that I wanted to test out, so here is what we ended up with:
It goes without saying that the process took longer than it did previously, but that’s ok! Having to perfect a new system only means that I get to make some more experimental cakes! I will most certainly be sharing them here as I work, so keep checking back for some really cool cakes that are on trend in the cake world.
That brings me to my final point–NEW ORDERS!
I am continuing with my maternity leave for the month of March, but that means that once April rolls around, I will be taking orders again! The first date for new orders going out is April 1st.I am taking a limited number of orders as I ease back into things and my calendar is already filling up, so if you have an event coming up in the next couple of months (especially on a weekend–they fill up quickly!), be sure to contact me soon so we can get your date reserved and get to work designing your sweet treat.
I’ll be popping in over the next few weeks to share some previous work, as well as my new experimental cakes. First up–the popular unicorn cake!
Every birthday cake that I create is special, but I had a personal connection to this particular cake. We celebrated my husband’s grandmother’s 85th birthday this past weekend with nearly all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Maureen has been so welcoming to me since …
You know how you look at something on Pinterest and you say to yourself, “Oh, I can totally do that! I’ve never done it before, but it can’t be that hard.” Maybe it was refinishing a piece of furniture, or a craft project with buttons …
I was given the privilege of creating a cake and cupcakes for a gender reveal party this past weekend. I received a sealed envelope with the sonogram and gender of the baby– the sonogram tech and I were the only people to know if it was a boy or girl!
The cake was filled with the appropriate color candy and the cupcakes were filled with colored frosting so that when they were cut, the gender was revealed to the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other friends and family who were there. How fun is that?!
I was honored to be part of such a special occasion!
